Sheinbaum defends the sovereignty of Mexico and rejects dual nationality in the Presidency

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, supported the legislative initiative that prohibits dual nationality for the position of head of the Federal Executive and state governments, with the objective of protecting the country's sovereignty and curbing any attempt at interference or subordination to foreign powers.

During her usual press conference, the president maintained that “in times when greater interference is or is sought”, constitutional loyalty must be indivisible, affirming that “the President of the Republic or governors should not have dual nationality because they must only have a homeland and a people to lead and obey.”

Hours before the proposal was submitted for debate in committees of the Chamber of Deputies, the head of state established a strong position in defense of the principle of self-determination: “We collaborate, but we don't subordinate ourselves; we don't want foreign interference of any kind in politics”, warning that swearing allegiance to two flags generates a clear “conflict of interest”.

In addition, Sheinbaum specified that the defense of patriotism in political leadership does not contradict economic development or international cooperation, clarifying that foreign investments “are welcome” as long as they are framed in strict respect for the Constitution and the laws of the Mexican State.
