Sinabung volcano in Indonesia erupts and throws ash almost 3.5 kilometers high

The Sinabung volcano, located in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia, registered a new eruption that expelled a column of ash and gases almost 3.5 kilometers high above sea level, according to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation of the Asian nation.

According to reports released by the TASS agency, the 2,460 meter-high volcanic structure has a history of high reactivity since 2010, when it resumed activity after being inactive for four centuries.

Authorities are monitoring the region because of the latent risk to adjacent populations. Sinabung's eruption history records tragic events in recent years, most notably the eruptions of 2014 and 2016, which killed 16 and 7 people, respectively.
