Spain records record for heat mortality with 5,232 deaths

Spain recorded the highest number of heat-related deaths since the All-Cause Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MOMO) operated in 2015, with 5,232 deaths estimated between May 15 and August 31, 2026.

The MOMO report breaks down the impact by month, age and gender: July counted 2,025 deaths and August reached 2,147, while 96.4% of the victims (5,048 people) were over 65, of whom 3,256 (62%) were over 85 years old; 60% of those killed were women, Telesur reported.

The balance of 2026 exceeds the summers of 2022 (4,789 deaths) and 2023 (3,035), although it remains below the 2003 episode, when nearly 13,000 deaths were estimated.
