Spanish Geographic Institute reported a magnitude 4.8 earthquake in Granada, Andalusia

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 4.8 shook during the early morning of this Saturday, August 14, in the Spanish province of Granada, in Andalusia, causing alarm scenes and initial reports of material damage.

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) placed the earthquake at 01:04 (local time), with an epicenter northwest of Alhendín, Cadena Ser reported.

The movement, reported the Russian Today website, was also perceived at a considerable distance from the epicenter, with reports from other Andalusian provinces such as Malaga, Córdoba, Cádiz and Seville. Authorities continue to monitor the evolution of seismic activity in the area.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), for its part, estimated the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.2, above the 4.8 calculated by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) of Spain. According to the US agency, the movement had a depth of 10 kilometers.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located one kilometer southwest of Otura, in the province of Granada, at the coordinates of 37.079 degrees north latitude and 3.649 degrees west longitude. The movement occurred at 23:04:40 GMT on Friday, equivalent to 01:04:40 on Saturday in Spain.

The IGN located the epicenter northwest of Alhendín, in the province of Granada, at the coordinates of 37.1169 degrees north latitude and 3.6618 degrees west longitude.

The Spanish agency recorded the earthquake exactly at 01:04:41 on Saturday (23:04:41 GMT on Friday) and also calculated a depth of 10 kilometers.
