Swedish Prime Minister resigns after Conservative Bloc's electoral defeat

The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, presented his formal resignation this Thursday to the President of the Parliament (Riksdag), Andreas Norlén, after confirming the defeat of the leading right-wing bloc in the parliamentary elections held last September 13.

The final count of the elections, which registered a citizen participation of 84.8%, gave victory to the center-left opposition coalition by consolidating 176 seats, compared to 173 won by the outgoing ruling alliance.

After formalizing the resignation, Kristersson said that his decision seeks to facilitate the institutional transition and accelerate the formal process of negotiations for the formation of a new Government in the Nordic country.

The electoral victory positions the progressive block - made up of the Social Democratic Party, the Left Party, the Center Party and the Green Party - to assume the leadership of the Executive under the leadership of former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, who will begin parliamentary consultations to structure the new government majority.
