Teachers from Ecuador march in Quito to reject the extension of the working day

Members of the National Union of Educators (UNE) mobilized this Monday in the Ecuadorian capital to the headquarters of the Constitutional Court to demand the repeal of Ministerial Agreement 0045-A, a rule issued by the Ministry of Education that establishes school activities during the weekends.

The march, which brought together provincial delegations of the teaching profession and representatives of social organizations, demands the declaration of unconstitutionality of the measure, considering that it violates the Organic Law on Intercultural Education (LOEI) and exceeds the legal working day of 40 hours a week without contemplating the cancellation of overtime.

During the tour from the Master's House, the president of the UNE, Andrés Quishpe, pointed out that the imposition of sabbatical activities increases the burden on teaching staff without solving the structural problems of the fiscal education system, such as the deterioration of infrastructure and the lack of healthcare resources in schools.

The constitutional body accepted the lawsuit filed by the union and granted a period of 15 days to the Education portfolio to support the issuance of the decree. The union leadership warned that it will keep the calls in the streets continuously until a favorable resolution is obtained on the working day.
