Teachers in Paraguay go on strike to demand salaries and a better budget

Various organizations of the teaching profession began mobilization and strike days this Thursday in Asunción and other parts of Paraguay, demanding a wage increase of 8%, a larger public budget for the education sector and prompt attention to infrastructure deficiencies affecting school institutions in the country.

The protests have among their triggers the rejection of an agreement signed independently between the Government of President Santiago Peña and a minority union sector, a measure that was described by the mobilized organizations as a maneuver aimed at weakening trade union unity.

The marches started from Plaza Batallón 40 in the capital to the headquarters of the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the National Congress, with the objective of pressuring the authorities to include the required budgetary allocations in the discussion of the General Budget of the Nation.

The spokespersons for the educational platforms warned that they will continue to protest actions in the streets until formal negotiating tables are consolidated that respond comprehensively to their labor requirements and guarantee decent conditions for the exercise of teaching in the public system.
