The number of deaths after a river overflow due to glacial collapse in Nepal has risen to 359

The death toll from the overflow of the Bhotekoshi River in central Nepal amounted to 359 people, local police reported through the Kathmandu Post newspaper. The catastrophe was caused last August 26 by a flood that originated after the fracture of a glacial structure on the Chinese slope of the border region.

According to analysis by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the flood was not due to an earthquake, as the first versions maintained, but to the violent collapse of a glacier. The sudden increase in flow broke into the district of Rasuwa, bordering Tibet, causing serious damage along the water basin.

The authorities also confirmed three people who died in Chinese territory and are still searching for more than 1,400 citizens reported missing after the passage of the current. The sudden increase in water flow destroyed road infrastructure, homes and road sections on both sides of the border.

In the affected areas, emergency teams and rescue forces deployed intensive operations to locate survivors and clear accumulated debris. International and local organizations are monitoring the region in the face of possible secondary landslides resulting from terrain instability
