The number of deaths caused by the earthquake in Colombia has risen to 281

The Colombian Government updated the balance of the emergency caused by last Monday's earthquake on Thursday and confirmed 281 deaths, 3,824 injured and 379 missing, amid the progress of recovery efforts in the areas most affected by the earthquake.

The official report also details the collapse of 127 buildings, 65,841 damaged homes and 10,677 destroyed, which shows the magnitude of material losses in the regions hit by the earthquake, Telesur reported.

The situation worsened with the number of 44,936 families affected and 102,105 people affected in 426 municipalities in 15 departments, with Quibdó, Manizales and Cali being the localities with the highest number of fatalities and collapses of residential and commercial structures.

Nils Grede, director of the World Food Program of the United Nations (UN) in Colombia, warned that the catastrophe had a more severe impact on the population with the least resources and the least capacity to respond to a crisis of this magnitude, in direct reference to the department of Chocó, the second poorest in the country.

In that region, 13,100 people are reported affected, a figure that is only surpassed by the 36,000 registered in Valle del Cauca, another of the territories hardest hit by the natural disaster.
