The number of deaths due to an earthquake in Colombia increases to 287

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management reported on August 14 that the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 10 in western Colombia has so far left 287 dead, 3,975 injured and 378 missing, while the number of 135,179 victims extends to 437 municipalities in 15 departments.

According to the balance sheet cut off at 9:00 in the morning, response teams have achieved 354 rescues alive, as a result of operations deployed since the beginning of the emergency, Telesur reported.

Infrastructure assessments are moving forward and confirm 79,108 affected homes, in addition to 13,077 destroyed, along with 121 buildings collapsed by the earthquake.

The report also details damage to 238 health centers, 2,486 educational institutions and 2,93 community spaces, figures that reflect the impact on essential services.

Road damage includes 254 roads, 87 water systems, 50 vehicle bridges and seven pedestrian crossings, in addition to five airports incorporated into the balance of committed infrastructure.

The impact also affected the fauna, with 338 animals affected, of which 169 were rescued by teams in the affected areas.

The earthquake had its epicenter in San José del Palmar, department of Chocó, and caused damage in 15 departments, according to the official record.

Emergency authorities and agencies are keeping search, rescue and assistance operations active, while checks continue to determine the full extent of the damage.
