The US announces its withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council after report on alleged crimes

The diplomatic representation of the United States (USA) announced the formal withdrawal and suspension of its participation in the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN), within the framework of the 63rd ordinary session of the organization held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The decision of the US Government came one day after an independent UN mission presented the conclusions of an investigation that indicated the existence of “reasonable reasons” to believe that armed forces of that country would have committed war crimes during incursions into Iranian territory.

The report of the international organization documents impacts against civilian infrastructure, highlighting the attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh elementary school, located in Minab, as well as the deployment of bombings with tungsten ammunition in residential areas and sports complexes in Lamerd.

In response to the announcement of the American delegation, the diplomatic representation of the Islamic Republic of Iran decided to take a stand, stating that the voluntary resignation from the multilateral forum does not exempt the Washington authorities from assuming their legal responsibilities before international courts, nor does it suspend the obligations contracted under the framework of international humanitarian law.
