Two consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and 4.5 shake central Costa Rica

Two moderate-intensity tremors shook the territory of Costa Rica early this Thursday morning, causing alarm among the population but without reporting injuries or material losses. The first event, of magnitude 5.0, occurred at 1:37 a.m., followed just three minutes later by a second earthquake of magnitude 4.5, as reported by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) of the National University (UNA).

According to the institution's technical reports, both earthquakes had their epicenter in the Coronado canton and were located at a depth of 11 kilometers. Telesur highlighted the opinion of the Ovsicori seismologist, Marino Protti, who explained that after the initial shock, nearly 30 aftershocks were recorded in the area in the following hours.

The National Emergency Commission (CNE), together with the Fire Department and the Costa Rican Red Cross, deployed preventive monitoring and ruled out structural damage or serious emergencies.

The authorities also clarified that a preliminary report on an alleged 5.8 earthquake in the town of Buenos Aires was due to an error in the automatic computer detection systems.
