UN Secretary General Warns of Financial Collapse and Demands Reform of Global Architecture

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, warned that current economic and political systems are profoundly fractured, perpetuating an excessive concentration of wealth and a lack of fair representation for Africa and developing countries.

Faced with this structural inequality, the highest representative of the multilateral organization, demanded a radical reform of the international financial architecture, denouncing that the current one “remains dysfunctional, unfair and has become obsolete”, so he urged to guarantee accessible financing and large scale debt relief to the most vulnerable nations.

In addition, the UN Secretary General warned of the ravages of the global environmental crisis, stating that “the planet continues to warm and climate risks are human disasters fueled by fossil fuels”, where populations with fewer resources suffer the most severe impact.

Guterres made an urgent call to eradicate political selectivity in international relations, and emphasized that “we must act in matters of peace and security without double standards; there is no good and bad interventionism”, and stressed that lasting peace will only be possible through multilateral cooperation, respect for international law and the effective defense of vulnerable populations.
