UNDP estimates the reconstruction of Venezuela after the earthquakes at 21 billion dollars

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) estimated at 21 billion dollars the investment needed for the reconstruction of Venezuela after the double earthquake that occurred last June 24.

Yamel Pérez, UNDP's inclusive development officer in Venezuela, said that the recovery encompassed infrastructure, livelihoods, social cohesion and basic services.

The official, in statements replicated by the Venezuelan News Agency (AVN) indicated that since June 25, the organization accompanied national institutions, communities, universities and the private sector in the recovery efforts after the earthquake.

To determine the requirements, the post-disaster needs assessment methodology (PDNA) was applied, with the participation of more than 100 officials and organizations such as the CAF, the World Bank, the IDB and the European Union.

The process made it possible to quantify damages, losses and needs in housing, health, education, water, energy, industry, commerce, tourism, governance and economy, among others. The housing sector received special attention because it is one of the most affected areas.

Pérez also highlighted that the evaluations measured the human impact on women, children, older adults and people with disabilities, in addition to institutional and service impacts.

Regarding the state of La Guaira, he noted that a third of the officials lost their lives during the earthquake and that several institutions suffered damage both to their infrastructure and to their human capital.

UNDP considered reconstruction as an opportunity to improve affected systems and is working with the Ministry of Water to recover and strengthen the supply of drinking water and other essential services.
