As a sign of rejection of the government proposals promoted by the ultra-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, the Central Unitary of Workers (CUT), the largest trade union organization in Colombia, called for a social mobilization for next Thursday, June 11.

The organization said that the mobilization, which will take place in public squares across the country starting at 6:00 in the afternoon, will also be to express support for the leftist candidate Iván Cepeda

One of the proposals promoted by the far-right leader during his campaign is to dismiss 700,000 public employees, the CUT warned, stating that the plan seeks to reduce the state structure from 216 to 82 entities, through the elimination, merger or privatization of 136 public bodies.

“This dismantling of the State would lead to greater social precariousness, unemployment and inequality, expanding the multiple demands and demands of citizens, especially the most vulnerable sectors. Experience shows that the private sector prioritizes profitability and business over social needs,” warned the union organization.

In addition, the CUT considered that Abelardo de la Espriella's program seeks to ignore and weaken trade unionism and other forms of social organization, by imposing regressive measures that would affect the exercise of collective rights and democratic freedoms.
