University teachers in Argentina start a 48-hour strike in rejection of the budget cut

The Trade Union Front of National Universities of Argentina began a 48-hour teaching and non-teaching strike in all public schools in the country, in rejection of the severe budgetary adjustment implemented by the national government. The protest measure seeks to denounce the paralysis of operating financing and the cumulative loss of purchasing power in the sector, according to information reported by Telesur.

During the day of the strike, unions demanded an urgent recomposition of salaries, after noting a drop of more than 50% in the purchasing power of university workers in the face of accumulated inflation. In addition, the trade unions called for the immediate opening of joint ventures and the reinstatement of the National Teacher Incentive Fund (FONID).

The call was joined by the main federations in the sector, including CONADU, FEDUN, FATUN and CTERA, which paralyzed the development of academic and administrative activities in the 57 public universities in the Argentine territory. Union representatives warned that insufficient funding threatens the continuity of student grants and the sustainability of research projects.

This action of force is part of a progressive plan of struggle that contemplates the development of public classes in the streets and legislative pressure for the treatment of a University Funding Act. The spokespersons of the academic community confirmed that they will deepen their complaints if they do not obtain concrete answers from the neoliberal government of Javier Milei.
