Venezuela highlighted territorial innovation at FAO as a pillar for food sovereignty

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela participated in the debate on Theme 5: “Promoting innovation for food security”, held during the 30th session of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG 30) of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The permanent representative of Venezuela to the United Nations Agencies based in Rome, Ambassador Marilyn Giuseppina Di Luca Santaella, reaffirmed that innovation must go beyond technological development and incorporate social, institutional and community dimensions, recognizing traditional and ancestral knowledge, with a rights-based approach, focused on people and adapted to the needs of each territory.

In this context, Venezuela presented the experience of the Scientific-Peasant Alliance, a public policy that articulates scientific knowledge with peasant knowledge to strengthen family farming, food sovereignty and the resilience of agri-food systems.

He also highlighted the promotion of applied research, technical assistance, national seed and food production, bioinputs, agroecological diversification and the training of producers, also promoting the participation of women and young people, the democratization of scientific knowledge and the preservation of biodiversity through peasant seed systems.

Finally, Venezuela reiterated its support for the measures proposed by the Committee and called for strengthening public investment in agri-food research, national innovation systems and South-South and triangular cooperation, reaffirming that science and innovation must be at the service of peoples to contribute to the eradication of hunger and guarantee the human right to adequate food.
