The Venezuelan ambassador to the United Nations (UN), Coromoto Godoy, stressed the need to reinforce the fight against poverty with concrete actions and international cooperation.
During his speech at the UN, on behalf of the group Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, he said that “poverty is not an accident, nor are slavery or apartheid. It is created by the human being and can be eliminated through the actions of human beings.”
Regarding the commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day, “he said that “hunger, exclusion, conflicts, as well as the imposition of unilateral coercive measures, represent obstacles that can only be overcome through genuine international cooperation, based on solidarity, mutual respect and multilateralism”.
He also recalled, Mandela demonstrated that peace is not conquered or preserved through violence or revenge, but through dialogue, negotiation, reconciliation and recognition of the dignity of the other.
“This commemoration is a valuable opportunity to pay tribute to a universal leader whose legacy continues to inspire the fight for human dignity, social justice, equality and peace.”
Finally, he noted that the group of Friends of the Charter of the UN celebrated 5 years of fighting for inclusive multilateralism.
