WHO warns of critical resource shortfall to contain Ebola outbreak in Congo

The World Health Organization (WHO) issued an alert about the critical deficit of financial and material resources needed to deal with the Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a situation that compromises the effectiveness of epidemiological containment efforts and direct health care in the most vulnerable areas of the country.

According to reports from the multilateral organization, the lack of timely funding drastically limits field operations, affecting the deployment of medical personnel, the provision of treatment and vaccination logistics. Spokespeople for the entity warned that “without an urgent injection of funds for the field response, operational capacities risk being overwhelmed by the speed of transmission in affected communities.”

The health contingency in the African nation is complicated by geographical and logistical challenges in hard-to-reach areas, where the Congolese Ministry of Health is making sustained efforts to maintain isolation and contact tracing protocols.
