WHO warns that Ebola outbreak in DRC may overcome the worst epidemic recorded in history

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) could become the most serious one recorded to date, with 4,400 cases and more than 2,000 deaths, while the spread exceeds the speed of any previous epidemic of this disease.

The director general of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus, said that the current episode is already the second worst in history and, if the trend continues, it could overcome the epidemic that occurred in West Africa between 2014 and 2016, which left about 28,000 infections and 11,000 deaths, Telesur reported.

The warning was issued one week after Tedros visited the DRC to evaluate the health response, in a context where Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone were the countries most affected during the previous outbreak.
