The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that the El Niño phenomenon entered a phase of rapid intensification in the tropical Pacific Ocean, with a probability close to 100 percent of maintaining exceptional strength until February 2027. According to global prediction models, the increase in sea surface temperature will cause severe atmospheric changes at the global level, increasing the risk of prolonged droughts, extreme heat waves and floods.

Given the magnitude of the event, the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, warned that humanity is entering a critical period of climate instability, making an urgent call on governments to accelerate adaptation measures. For her part, the Secretary General of the WMO, Celeste Saulo, described the event as a historic episode that will severely affect agricultural production and water resources, also announcing the organization's greatest operational mobilization in the last 50 years.

In response to the alert, various agencies of the United Nations system coordinate preventive action plans aimed at strengthening risk management in key sectors such as health, infrastructure and energy. In addition, technical teams will maintain the continuous delivery of detailed scientific reports to guide the strategic decisions of regional and local governments.

The international deployment seeks to anticipate attention to the environmental emergencies expected in the coming months and to coordinate a timely humanitarian response. Global authorities agreed that immediate institutional preparation and the protection of vulnerable communities will be decisive in safeguarding global food security and saving lives.
