An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 shook Japan at 02:00 local time, with an epicenter located 4 kilometers northwest of the city of Toride, in Ibaraki prefecture.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS, for its acronym in English), the earthquake originated at a depth of 77.6 kilometers.
The tremor was clearly felt in the capital, Tokyo, and in neighboring prefectures such as Saitama and Chiba.
The USGS issued a green alert through its damage assessment system, indicating that there is a very low likelihood of fatalities and significant economic losses.
Authorities ruled out any tsunami hazard.
