Venezuela and Red Cross strengthen humanitarian and emergency cooperation

The first Deputy Minister of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Oliver Blanco, and the Deputy Minister for Multilateral Issues, Joaquín Pérez Ay, held a meeting with representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Venezuelan Red Cross , with the purpose of strengthening bilateral cooperation in humanitarian and emergency management matters.

The meeting was attended by the regional director for the Americas of the IFRC, Loyce Pace; the director general of the Venezuelan Red Cross, Simon Pestano; the head of the IFRC Delegation, Nelson Aly, and Andrea Canepa, of Institutional Relations of the organization. During the meeting, the authorities reviewed the actions taken after the earthquakes of June 24 and outlined new lines of joint work for sustainable recovery, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade reported.

Blanco highlighted the role of the International Red Cross Movement in caring for the most vulnerable people in the country, especially during the earthquake emergency, and noted that the Foreign Ministry continues to open spaces for international cooperation. “From the Foreign Ministry, we continue to open doors to international cooperation, deepening our work with organizations to guarantee access to those who want to help,” he said.

For his part, Pérez Ayspecified that the meeting made it possible to move from the immediate response to a resilient recovery, articulating efforts with national priorities and the Venezuela Renace Plan; in addition, they indicated that areas were identified to strengthen national capacities in disaster risk reduction, promote resilient communities and systematize lessons learned, based on respect for humanitarian principles and in coordination with State institutions.
