Commander Hugo Chávez reaffirmed his firm commitment to the defense of national sovereignty, during a public event in which he called on the People and the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) to strengthen their preparation for any external threat.
“I'm not going to sit idly by, I'm going to repeat it: We are obliged to prepare to defend the Homeland of Bolivar, the Fatherland of our children, even if it costs our lives!” , said Chávez on November 13, 2009 in Caracas.
In his speech, Chávez emphasized that Venezuela is a free nation that will never be a colony again. In contrast to the foreign policy of neighboring governments, he said: “While Álvaro Uribe Vélez handed over Colombian territory to the Yankees, we did just the opposite: We freed our territory from the curse of the empire.”
In that regard, he called for increasing the operational capacity of Venezuelan troops in all their components — land, water and air — as well as the spirit of defense of the people and the combative morale of the militias. “It is my obligation to call on the entire nation to reinforce collective preparation for any attempt at aggression,” he stressed.
Chávez warned that any threat against Venezuelan sovereignty will find a unified response: “Here you are not going to get a solitary Chávez, nor solitary soldiers: here you are going to get us all together, the people of Bolivar and the Armed Forces of Bolivar , the Nation all in defense of the freedom, peace, sovereignty and the future of Venezuela”.
