The mayor of the city of Uriapan, in the state of Michoacán, Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, was killed Saturday night in an armed attack during an event commemorating the Day of the Dead.
According to the Fuser News portal, the attack occurred while Manzo, who was hit three times by bullets, inaugurated the traditional Candle Festival, one of the most representative cultural events in the region. The head of the Public Works Secretariat of the Uruapan City Council, Esteban Constantino Magaña, was also injured, whose state of health is unknown.
According to the authorities, an armed civilian opened fire on the local president and his entourage, which sparked a firefight when the escorts repelled the aggression until the attacker was neutralized. The governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, explained that two people involved in the events were arrested.
Manzo Rodríguez was quickly rescued and taken with serious gunshot wounds to a hospital, where he died minutes later. Witnesses caught the moment when they tried to revive him and drove him to an ambulance.
The mayor, who was elected in September 2024, was characterized by maintaining a frontal stance against organized crime. Previously, he complained to the Security Secretariat that he feared for his life in the face of constant threats.
