On January 18, 1965, Venezuelan boxer Carlos “Morocho” Hernández won the Junior Welterweight world title.

Hernández became the first Venezuelan world champion, after defeating the American Eddie Perkins.

“To the chorus of 'let's go Morocho', the shepherd boy became enraged and went out to shoot no matter what came. Then it really hit. And he picked up the pace of the lawsuit. In the 13th round, he put an impressive right hand on Perkins' head, and he clung to Hernández's arms with excessive anguish. He was visibly sick, and only that attachment to our fighter's biceps saved him from going to the canvas,” said journalist Raúl Hernández.

The fight lasted 15 rounds and took place at the New Circus in Caracas.
