Simón Bolívar and María Teresa del Toro were married in Madrid on May 26, 1802, in the primitive parish church of San José, after obtaining permission from the King to do so and obtaining the exemption from reprimand.
Bolívar, used to present his beloved as a “jewel without defects, valuable without calculation”.
On June 15, 1802, the newlyweds left for Caracas, disembarking on July 12 in La Guaira.
While in Venezuela, María Teresa fell ill with “malignant fevers”, now known as yellow fever or malaria, and for this reason she died on January 22, 1803. After eight months of marriage and two years of dating, Bolívar lost his beloved wife.
