On July 22, 1991, South African leader Nelson Mandela visited Venezuela as part of his tour of the Caribbean and South America.

Venezuela deserves a very special place in our hearts,” Madela said in her first words on her homeland.

During his visit, he thanked the Venezuelan people for their support against apartheid in their nation.

“The irresistible power of our struggle, in addition to the support of men, women and young people of great conscience, all over the world, has forced Apartheid to lose viability. We have forced the racist regime in Pretoria to join us in the search for a peaceful way to end Apartheid to create a united and democratic South Africa, not racist or sexist,” he said.

During his visit , Mandela was awarded the Order of the Liberator in the rank of Grand Cordon.
