On October 6, 1976, an atrocious terrorist attack occurred on Cubana de Aviación flight 455, which was on its way from the island of Barbados to that of Jamaica bound for Havana, Cuba. The 73 people on board the aircraft did not survive the attack, which until then was the worst attack of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.
Among the passengers were 57 Cubans, 11 Guyanese and five Korean cultural officials, who were preparing to arrive on the island of Cuba after the National Fencing Team had made a majestic participation in the Central American championship of that sport.
It was explosives that caused the current ship to crash and fall into the sea, leaving the Cuban homeland in a deep mourning on October 6, 1976. So far, it is considered to be the worst attack that nation has ever received. Two bombs, described as dynamite or C-4 explosive, were used in the mournful event.
Subsequent evidence implicated several individuals opposed to the Revolution, from Cuban exile, who had ties to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), in addition to some members of the Venezuelan secret police at the time, the so-called Directorate of Intelligence and Prevention Services (DISIP). In addition, the event quickly had international political implications when the Cuban government accused, although without concrete evidence, the United States government of complicity in the attack.
