On April 26, 1937, men and women from Guernica, Spain, were bombed by the Condor Legion in Germany and Italy.

This happened during the Spanish civil war, the town was a republican area but its population was not armed, however, it was the subject of war strategy and also to show the fascist face of Francisco Franco.

The Basque city was completely destroyed, leaving 654 dead and 889 injured during three hours of attack, where at least 31 tons of bombs were thrown at a defenseless population that, in the midst of the confusion, did nothing more than try to hide from Nazi planes.

This event is considered to be the first European city to be attacked by air. As a symbol of rejection of these actions, the painter Pablo Picasso captured his famous work The Horror of the Bombing, one of the most important paintings of the 20th century.
