The Battle of Taguanes was staged on the plains of Cojedes state on July 31, 1813, between realists commanded by Colonel Julián Izquierdo, and patriots under the command of Simón Bolívar, Major General Rafael Urdaneta, Atanasio Girardot and Figueredo, among others.

In that fight for freedom, after six hours of combat, soldiers from both sides shed their blood to close with laurels of glory the Admirable Campaign, which the Father of the Fatherland had launched months earlier from the Colombian border.

There, on July 31, 1813, Bolivar, with his genius and sword, was the protagonist of the most important battle that took place in the lands of Cojedes, since it succeeded in being awarded the title of Liberator of Venezuela on October 14 of that same year (1813).
