Hundreds of residents of the town of Canaan, located north of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, took to the streets to express their rejection of the arrival of more than 2,000 military personnel from El Salvador, deployed as part of the search operations for four aeronautical technicians who disappeared after an ambush carried out on October 18, 2026.

The troops sent by the Salvadoran administration began their first maneuvers in the Cul-de-Sac area, northeast of the Haitian capital, with the stated objective of dismantling the armed groups known as Chen Mechan and 400 Mawozo, identified as directly responsible for the incursion and disappearance of the workers.

In this regard, community mobilization spokespersons took a stand against the presence of foreign force, stating: “The operations constitute a threat against the population and we reject any intervention that could cause more civilian casualties in the area.”

The demonstrators also maintained that in the Canaan community there are no acts of violence, kidnappings or armed clashes, so they demanded that international and local authorities not stigmatize the civilian population or associate the entire town with the actions of criminal groups.
