On April 16, 1889, British actor and film director Charles Chaplin was born. His filmography included “Modern Times” (1936), a critique of the system of capitalist exploitation of the working class.
Charles Chaplin was the first actor to appear on the cover of Time magazine and in the 1916 comic strip “PA's Imported Son-in-Law”.
The Great Dictator (1940) was his first spoken film that challenged Nazism and it is believed that Adolf Hitler saw the film twice.
The actor and director never managed to win the Oscar in the acting category, but he did receive the honorary award in 1928 and 1972 and one more award for best soundtrack. He was also a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948.
