On June 20, 2008, Commander Hugo Chávez urged revolutionaries who wish to run for elected office, such as mayors, to act with detachment and deep patriotic commitment.
“Whoever wants money don't get involved, don't get in here, no! go do business the other way. Whoever wants to get rich doesn't come here. Go the other way,” he said from the state of Táchira, while stressing that public service the Revolution is not a space for personal ambitions or economic interests.
In his speech, Chávez argued that the true meaning of the revolutionary struggle implies total surrender to the People. “Here we want men and women who are able not only to let go of what little they have, but to let go of life itself based on the sacred interests of the Venezuelan people, of the Venezuelan homeland,” he said.
He also reaffirmed that those who join the ranks of the leadership must be willing to give everything for the cause. “If life itself were to be given, here we are. To give my life for our people. That is the true revolutionary, the true revolutionary,” he concluded.
