During his visit to Italy, Commander Hugo Chávez Frías, denounced repeated attacks by Americans against Vene Zuela due to the country's vast energy reserves.

Chávez stated that the destabilizing actions taken against Venezuela, including the 2002 coup d'etat and the campaigns of political aggression, are based on an interest in domestic crude oil. “They want our oil and we don't want to keep giving it to them as we did for 100 years,” he said on October 17, 2005.

In this context, he reiterated the strategic objective of using the country's energy resources for the integral development of the Venezuelan people, as well as to strengthen solidarity cooperation with Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, Europe and also with the popular sectors of the United States.

“Oil sovereignty must be at the service of Peoples, not of transnational corporations or the elites that represent them,” he said.
