Dionangel Vargas won the silver medal in 75 kg weightlifting at the Santa Fe South American Championship

Venezuelan weightlifting returned to the international podium with Dionangel Vargas, who was proclaimed South American runner-up in the 75-kilogram category, this Tuesday at the Santa Fe 2026 South American Games.

In the starting mode, the Venezuelan performed perfectly when he successfully completed his three attempts with marks of 125 kg, 135 kg and 138 kg, which allowed him to position himself in the direct fight for the positions of honor.

In the running phase, the Venezuelan athlete opened with a valid lift of 156 kg. Despite giving up on his second attempt over 165 kg, Vargas pulled out the caste in his third and final shift to dominate that weight, sealing a total mark of 303 kilograms that finally awarded him the silver medal.

The title of the category was in the hands of Colombian weightlifter Luis Mosquera —double Olympic medalist with bronze in Rio 2016 and silver in Tokyo 2020—, who confirmed his hegemony by winning the gold medal with a cumulative total of 323 kilos (145 kg at the start and 178 kg at the start).

The continental podium was completed by the Peruvian Miguel Ángel Preciado, who won the bronze medal after accumulating 275 kilograms in total, a product of 120 kg at the start and 155 kg in the envión.
