The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) called on countries in the region to intensify surveillance and containment measures in the face of the sustained increase in vector-borne viruses. The agency warned that the expansion of these insects represents a growing health challenge for the continent.
As detailed by the regulatory body, as of August 13, 429 cases of West Nile fever were recorded in nine European countries. Health authorities warned that the number of infections will continue to rise over the next few weeks due to the region experiencing the highest peak of transmission.
Added to this contingency is the rapid spread of the Asian tiger mosquito, a vector capable of transmitting diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. Currently, this species is found in 16 European nations, which is double the number of countries registered twelve years ago.
Faced with this scenario, the ECDC called for strengthening management of larval sources, promoting community participation and implementing new technological alternatives for pest control, stressing the need to overcome the progressive resistance of mosquitoes to traditional insecticides.
