The Eternal Commander Hugo Chávez said that at the Military Academy he learned to love his country deeply and infinitely.

“I swore an oath on July 7, 1975, with my second lieutenant's sabre, in the courtyard of honor of the Military Academy, I swore in earnest, before God and the flag, to defend the Fatherland until I even lost my life,” said Chávez, on September 23, 2006, from Fuerte Tiuna in Caracas.

He also asserted that to swear to defend the Fatherland and even to lose one's life, it is necessary to love it. “Whoever doesn't love this country is not Venezuelan,” he said.

Chávez quoted the song by Ali Primera: “The Fatherland is the boy man, the Fatherland is the boy man, the country is the man. My country has been pregnant for four hundred years.” “You have to love it, you have to feel it, you have to adore it, to be able to defend it,” he said.
