On December 3, 2023, the Consultative Referendum for the Defense of Guiana Esequiba was held with the objective of ratifying the sovereignty of Venezuelans over this territory.
This consultation was carried out due to the interventionist actions of the government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, which, with the non-compliance with the Geneva Agreement of 1966, intend to take possession of Bolivarian territory. That is why Venezuelans supported this proposal promoted by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, which approved the creation of a new state in the Essequibo area.
The Yes victory
was overwhelming with a total of 10 million 554 thousand 320, according to
data released by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
“It has been a total
success for democracy. An overwhelming victory throughout Venezuela
for every question with a very important level of participation of the people.
Venezuela won,” President Maduro said at the time.
Two years after this historic event, Venezuela reaffirms its defense of the integrity of the Essequibo and its commitment to the Geneva Agreement of 1966.
