Commander Hugo Chávez , in honor of the revolutionary leader Ernesto “Che” Guevara, declared October 8 as the Day of the Integral Community Physician.

It is important to remember that Che was a doctor by profession, who demonstrated with his example of life and social commitment a more humane and non-mercantilist approach to contemporary medicine.

Comprehensive doctors in Venezuela are trained in the National Training Program in Integral Community Medicine, created in 2005 by Commander Chávez to train doctors with a more humanistic vision and committed to the prevention and protection of the health of the population, with an emphasis on the humblest and most vulnerable sectors.

The training program, open to the people in the national centers of six public schools, has graduated more than 18,000 doctors who work in popular offices in Barrio Adentro, Comprehensive Diagnostic Medical Centers (CDI), Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services (SRI), outpatient clinics and hospitals, located in 311 of the 365 municipalities of the country.

During the pandemic, they did a great job of stopping and preventing COVID-19 house-to-house to ensure that the pandemic was as well controlled as possible.
