The president of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, reported that 7,365 people who were deprived of their liberty or subject to alternative measures obtained full freedom under the Amnesty for Democratic Coexistence Act.
“We wanted to report that we have received requests from Venezuelan politicians and politicians who live abroad, as well as from citizens who also reside outside the country, to have their cases dealt with in accordance with the second paragraph of article 7 of the law,” he said during a press conference.
Rodríguez indicated that the Special Monitoring Commission is empowered to process these requests.
“We have ordered the commission to start dealing with any case that comes from abroad. Any Venezuelan politician or politician who intends to return to the country and to do politics in Venezuela can be served through the commission,” he said.
The President of the Parliament explained that the legislative body also examined cases not explicitly covered by the facts established by law.
“The commission has made it possible to address them in order to give a recommendation or to advise the organs of the judicial system or the Executive Branch,” he said. He added that the rule is applied without personalizing situations: “Laws have no name, laws have articles, and in those articles it is established what the facts are.”
Rodríguez confirmed that he had received requests from people involved in highly dangerous events, as well as from political actors who in the past held positions and were involved in irregular events.
“What I am saying is that the guidance given to the commission is open to dealing with cases of Venezuelan politicians and politicians who live abroad and who wish to reintegrate into the Venezuelan political program,” he said.
