On August 27, 1785, José Ascensión Farreras was born, a prominent general who had been in charge of the security of Lower Guiana since 1828.

He was on the realist side, however, in 1817 he joined the patriot army after the Battle of San Félix.

The son of freed slaves, he fought alongside Simon Bolivar, who held him in high esteem.

Farreras stood out in numerous clashes, especially in the Southern Campaign where the Guiana region was liberated.

The Liberator appointed him military commander of old Guiana, currently Bolivar state.
