On August 18, 1989, Luis Carlos Galán, a Colombian politician, was assassinated in the Department of Cundinamarca during his campaign as a presidential candidate in the South American country.
Galán was a member of the “New Liberalism” party, representing economic and social hope for his country, but this dream of Colombians was once again frustrated by drug trafficking policies. This assassination was ordered by the Medellín Cartel, Pablo Escobar, Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha and Alberto Santofimio Botero, the masterminds of the crime.
At the time, the polls were a winner, but the drug cartel had other plans for Colombia: To continue to subject it to social chaos.
According to Telesur, for Juan Manuel Galán, his father was a fervent defender of human rights and pointed out that, if he had governed, he might not have experienced the upsurge of the war.
36 years after his death, Galán is one of the victims of so many massacres and murders that today continue at the hands of Uribism in the face of the complicit silence of the world elite.
