Minister Garcés: More than 50% of the operational capacity of Maiquetía Airport has been restored

The Minister of Popular Power for Transport, Francisco Garcés, stressed that thanks to the joint work of national and international technical teams, it was possible to restore more than 50% of the operational capacity at the Maiquetía “Simon Bolivar” International Airport in just 35 days, after the installation of the temporary terminals.

In an interview with Unión Radio, he also emphasized the gradual recovery of the national port system.

In this regard, in maritime matters, Garcés confirmed the recovery of the national port system by announcing that 100% of the cargo cranes are active in the Port of La Guaira.

I also point out that to guarantee and optimize the country's commercial dynamics, part of the port operations were strategically mobilized to Puerto Cabello, thus ensuring the efficient flow of goods and supplies.

On the other hand, the president of the Presidential Commission for the Evaluation of Infrastructure Habitability, announced the implementation of a new, stricter seismic emergency code in Venezuela.

He specified that the commission is drafting an emergency code for the construction of new buildings in Venezuela, “you have to follow some parameters additional to those of the standard.”

The Emergency Code and Complementary Building Regulations have just been officially entrusted to the newly sworn in Earthquake Technical Advisory Committee. “Last Monday, the commission that is making the emergency regulations was sworn in, that is, the Presidential Commission has a technical working committee that also has an international technical committee that has received visits from international professional and scientific missions, with which we have documented and improved our protocols,” he said.

He stressed that, for example in La Guaira, “these new houses have an increase in the seismic threat, a limitation in ductility and displacement. You have more severe elements that make your construction take more conservative parameters, that is, these structures that are being built will have a higher level of resistance than the previous code. That's basically what we're doing depending on the event we had.”

He stressed that we must be very responsible. “A structure that has been damaged by an earthquake doesn't repair the crack in the column or the piece that fell on it with a little mortar, you make sand, cement and glue it, that's not the case,” he said.

He explained that every project for a house with habitability restrictions has to go through a repair process established by the Urban Planning Act, it has to be notified to the mayor's office, a repair project must be sent “and once submitted you start your repair, that is, you don't have to have it approved, then the mayor's office will approve.”
