On January 8, 2007, the Ministry of Popular Power for Indigenous Peoples was created by Commander Hugo Chávez Frías, with the firm intention of making visible the more than 40 native peoples that live in our territory.
This Ministry is made up of the vice-ministries for Living Well, Formation and Ancestral Knowledge and Habitat, Community Development and Identity for Indigenous Peoples, as well as territorial directorates for the timely care of the country's indigenous population.
Among the outstanding achievements of this institution are the construction of more than 4,000 homes in the farthest corners of the country, the provision of funding for the execution of socio-productive projects and the comprehensive care of indigenous peoples with the support of the Guaicaipura Mission.
In addition to the creation of the Indigenous Ministry, other achievements for this sector have been the opening of the National Institute of Indigenous Languages, the National Bilingual Intercultural Directorate, the National Directorate of Indigenous Health and a National Prosecutor's Office with indigenous competence.
