On July 13, 1833, the decree was published by which the National Library of Venezuela was created, during the presidency of General José Antonio Páez, being the first public library for Caracas and with a very different architecture from the modern building that today houses the history of a nation.
Its mission is to preserve the historical and documentary memory of the nation, in addition to putting it at the service of all its users, researchers, teachers, students and producers from various areas, who make use of their collections and the experience and knowledge that their referees have about them.
In the same way, it is the repository of the bibliographic and non-bibliographic documentary collection of Venezuela and Venezuelanist, and consequently the creator and administrator of the Venezuelan audiovisual archive, the newspaper library and the mapoteca.
Currently, the National Library is rushing to adapt to the demands of modern times in terms of the use of technology, using digitization as an effective means for document preservation and at the same time to favor both people with disabilities and those who are far from the capital or who have difficulty accessing the Foro Libertador Cultural Complex, who can now consult online, from any computer and at any time, the various documents that are already found digitized.
