The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, celebrated this Friday the 26th anniversary of the first consultative referendum in the country, convened by Commander Hugo Chávez with the objective of installing a National Constituent Assembly (ANC) to re-found the Republic.
“Today we celebrate 26 years since the first consultative referendum in history in 200 years of the Republic, convened by whom? Hugo Chávez Frías, who had proposed it as his main electoral commitment, the great democratizer who handed political power to the people of Venezuela,” said the Head of State on his social networks.
This referendum was one of Commander Chávez's first steps to “put an end to the farce of bourgeois democracy, that of surnames, of oligarchies, to begin to build a popular democracy, with the empowered people as protagonists. An unprecedented event!” , highlighted Maduro.
“The Constituent Assembly of 1999 was an awakening, the beginning of a historic era, a truly popular process that today we are called to deepen with the Constitutional Reform to advance to the new modernity,” he added.
