On the occasion of commemorating 220 years of Haiti's independence, the head of state, Nicolás Maduro sent a message of “solidarity and affection” to this people.
Through his account on the social network X, the president pointed out that: “The noble people of Haiti today commemorate 220 years of independence from French colonialism and its rise in history as a free Republic after a long and heroic popular struggle. We send him our hug, solidarity and love as always. '
After 12 years of combat by the indigenous army against one of the best troops of the time, under the supervision of Napoleon Bonaparte, on January 1, 1804, the revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the island's independence.
The independence movement originated in 1791 with the slave insurrection, led by the Jamaican Boukman, who tried to implement the declaration of Human and Citizen Rights established by the French Revolution in 1789.
