The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, confirmed this Thursday his commitment to equality and justice, as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was commemorated.
“64 years after the Sharpeville Massacre, we join the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, in solidarity with the struggles of peoples for equality and equity,” he said through the social network X.
The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) declared this day in 1966 in honor of the 69 people who were killed by the police in a peaceful demonstration against apartheid's “pass laws” in Sharpeville, South Africa, on March 21, 1960.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is an annual reminder to the international community to redouble its efforts to end all forms of discrimination, racism, xenophobia, hate speech and hate crimes.
