The president of the National Assembly (AN), Jorge Rodríguez, recalled the historical context in which the assassination of his father, Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, occurred.

“He was assassinated in what has been called representative democracy, the fourth republic, which was nothing more than a party dictatorship characterized by the persecution of anyone who did not agree with the plans of that dictatorship,” Rodríguez said from the General Cemetery of the South 50 years after the death of the revolutionary leader.

He noted that this period was marked by repression against university students and by thousands of victims of torture and massacres.

Rodríguez “maintained that Jorge Antonio Rodríguez's voice was raised to show us the future”, and that that future is built today based on the defense of democracy and the search for prosperity. “This is the future we are building: a future to strengthen democracy, to seek prosperity and to overcome the tragedy we are experiencing right now,” he said.
